The 2016 Nissan Titan is an all-new model. Officially called the "Titan XD", the pickup is technically a heavy duty (HD) thanks to the heavier NV commercial van elements that underpin it. The XD HD is offered in a crew cab body style and a 6.5-ft. truck bed at the dealerships.
Buyers have five trim levels to choose from. The S is the base model. The list of standard equipment includes a manual bench front seat, Bluetooth audio connectivity, vinyl flooring and cloth seats. The SV builds on the lower trim with floor carpeting and more electronics like subscription-based satellite radio and power side rearview mirrors.
The mid-level Titan XD Pro-4X is aimed at shoppers who spend a good amount of time off the road. Skid plates, a lockable rear differential and special Bilstein shocks come standard. Same with a towing package and spray-in bedliner. The SL is more street-oriented, replacing the Pro-4X's off-road equipment and features with such comfort-centered items like leather upholstery and 20-in. alloy wheels. Chrome is used generously on the exterior to separate the SL from its off-roading "sibling".
Speaking of separating itself, the high-end Platinum Reserve comes with such exclusive appearance accents such as dark chrome exterior plating and two-toned leather upholstery. Wood inserts are used throughout the interior. Other creature comforts exclusive to the trim level include standard aluminum sill plates and heated and cooled front seats.
Each trim level of the 2016 Nissan Titan XD can be customized with even more features. Most are offered in packages. The aptly-named S Convenience and Utility adds such items as a receiver hitch and an overhead console to the S while a DVD rear-seat entertainment system is offered exclusively on the Platinum Reserve.
"The full-size truck market is the toughest market to crack in the entire industry, with so many outstanding products available," Fred Diaz, vice president and general manager of trucks and light commercial vehicles for Nissan, said in a statement. "This new Nissan TITAN XD is designed to offer buyers something the others don't – combining outstanding towing and hauling capabilities and noteworthy fuel economy while towing and hauling. It also offers excellent ride comfort and handling, and the features and amenities that real working truck owners want."
A 5.0-liter turbo V-8 diesel motivates the 2016 Nissan Titan XD. Output from this potent powerplant is 310 horsepower and 555 lb.-ft. of torque which are channeled to the rear wheels via the standard six-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is available. Tow capacity ranges from 12,314 lbs. with rear-wheel drive S models and goes up to 11,784 lbs. with the Pro-4X.
